VAPOUR-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE SVITAPFOL (D)

Description:
The material is used as a protective waterproof membrane in ventilated sloping roof systems. Svitapfol D is a three-layer material, Svitapfol Silver D is a two-layer material.

SVITAPFOL D – the carrier is an HDPE grid providing the required strength of the membrane, the top and bottom layers of the polyethylene membrane (LDPE) provide the waterproof property. In order to increase the vapour-permeability of the membrane, the entire surface of Svitapfoil D is fitted with micro perforation. The Svitapfoil D membranes have a bonded green marking band 12 cm from the edge which determines the recommended horizontal overlap of membrane strips.

SVITAPFOL SILVER D – the carrier is a tape polyethylene fabric (HDPE) which is coated with a polyethylene foil (LDPE) on one side. This reinforced membrane is dyed silver and micro perforated in order to increase the effect of vapour permeability. Thanks to the used carrier, Svitapfol Silver D has a high tensile strength in both directions.

Function:
It protects attic rooms under a roof from dust and soot, and serves as protection against the leakage of residual water into thermal insulation. At the same time, thanks to its ability to let through water vapour, it allows the ventilation of vapours from the interior of the building.

Assembly:
Svitapfol D is laid horizontally directly on the rafters with the more dominant side of the marking tape on the edge pointing to the roofing. This tape also specifies the recommended overlap of each membrane strip. The individual membrane strips overlap each other in the downward direction so as to conduct water out. The assembly begins with the gutter and continues up toward the ridge. The edge of the membrane has to extend into the gutter. If the edge of the roof is solved differently than with a gutter, it is necessary, for example, to attach the edge of the membrane to the drip mould by a connecting tape. The membrane is unrolled in a horizontal direction along the entire length of the roof and it is fixed by galvanized nails or staples from a mechanical stapler to the rafters. The distance between the rafters must not exceed 1.2 m. Battens are fixed on top of the membrane and then counter battens are fixed horizontally according to the size of the roofing material. The process is the same until the ridge of the roof is reached. The recommended horizontal overlap of the individual membrane strips is shown by a coloured tape, the actual overlap depends on the angle of the roof and it is given in a table below. At the ridge the membranes leave a 5 cm wide ventilation gap which is used for the exit of air. The vapour-permeable membrane must not be laid directly on the boarding, other base material, and it must not come into contact with thermal insulation. The air gap between the thermal insulation and the protective membrane depends (as does the overlap of the membrane) on the angle of the roof (see the table). It has to be 2-4 cm high and there have to be suitable conditions for the flow of air. In the lower part of the roof at the top plate outside air has to be able to get into the gap. The air then flows through the gap upwards and at the ridge it passes out of the roof through the ventilation gap and ventilation openings. Battens of 2-4 cm in height (according to the height of the gap) and fixed along the rafters can be used to keep the insulation from filling the entire gap. All openings for the access and exit of air have to be protected against the entry of animals.

ROOFING AND REFLECTIVE VAPOUR-PROOF INSULATION MEMBRANES

VAPOUR-PROOF SVITAPFOL N
It is a three-layer material, whose carrier is an HDPE grid sealed against the penetration of water and water vapour by a polyethylene foil. The Svitapfol N membranes have a bonded black marking tape approx. 12 cm from the edge which shows the recommended horizontal overlap of membrane strips.

VAPOUR SVITAPFOL Al N
It is a three-layer material whose carrier are an HDPE grid and an aluminium foil which ensures the reflective ability of the membrane. The aluminium foil in conjunction with the polyethylene foil ensure very high impermeability of water and water vapour and a high reflective ability.

ALPET
It is a four-layer material. The carrier of the Alpet membrane are a polyethylene grid and a polyester foil with a deposited aluminium layer which provides the reflective ability of the membrane. The polyester foil together with the polyethylene foil ensure high impermeability of water and water vapour.

Functions
The vapour-proof Svitapfol N barriers, vapour-proof reflective Svitapfol Al N and Alpet barriers prevent water vapours which occur as a result of activities in the house and water vapours caused by breathing of people in the house from penetrating into the roof structure and insulation where these vapours otherwise condensate and cause the formation of moulds and rot of the wooden structure of the house.
Both reflective membranes are also characterized by their reflective effect, this means that they reflect radiant heat back into the room.
All the vapour-proof barriers have high strength, and they therefore do not tear or break during the laying or afterwards. The composition of the membranes ensures that they remain flexible for a long time.

Assembly:
All types of vapour-proof barriers are placed between the thermal insulation and the inner wall of the room. They are laid horizontally and vertically on the inner side of the rafters or other load-bearing structure of the roof directly to the applied thermal insulation. They are fixed by staples from a mechanical stapler, or possibly by galvanized or aluminium nails. Each penetration of a nail has to be sealed. Attention must be paid to proper bonding of the individual strips of the vapour-proof reflective membranes by means of an adhesive tape. No holes in the membranes must be left behind, and the vapour-proof membrane must be sealed by means of compression tapes to all structures (windows, walls, etc.). The vapour-proof property of the membranes must not be disrupted by the electricity and water distribution system.
2 conditions are important for achieving the reflective effect of the Svitapfol Al N and Alpet membranes:
• Vapour-proof reflective membranes Svitapfol Al N and Alpet are laid with the aluminium layer facing the inner space of the building.
• A gap of 4-6 cm must be made between the membranes and the ceiling.

Method of using roof membranes:

SVITAPFOL 150 NT - water-proof membrane

Description:
The roof membrane Svitapfol 150 NT is a four-layer material whose carrier are an HDPE grid and a special polypropylene fibre fabric. Due to its design, it can be applied directly to the roof decking. It is only necessary to make a ventilation gap of at least 2 cm between the membrane and the roofing or decking and insulation (lower ventilated layer).

Function:
The membrane protects attic rooms under the roof from dust and soot, it also serves as protection against the penetration of water into the thermal insulation.

The use of roof membrane Svitapfol 150 NT:
ventilated roof system – roofing on battens, decking

Assembly:
Assembly is to be carried out according to the same rules as those in the assembly of vapour-permeable membranes. The Svitapfol 150 NT membrane does not have a margin strip, therefore it is necessary to observe the overlap width (according to the table – see vapour-permeable membranes). The Svitapfol 150 NT is laid with the side of the non-woven fibre textile facing the room.

SVITAPCON - anti-condensation roof membrane

Svitapcon is a four-layer membrane with high strength for roof systems with sheet metal roofing. It can be used also in classically ventilated roof systems. The reinforcing grid ensures the required strength of the membrane, the top layer of polyethylene foil ensures the waterproof property, a special polyester non-woven textile with absorption properties is attached to the bottom polyethylene layer.

Function:
This membrane protects the internal structure of the building against the penetration of moisture from rain and snow, and also against dust and soot. The absorbtion layer of the non-woven textile prevents the dripping of condensated water vapours into the inner parts of the building, or thermal insulation. After the stabilization of temperature conditions, this moisture is ventilated away thanks to a ventilation gap under the membrane and the flow of air. The Svitapcon membrane reduces the possibility of condensation of water vapours on the applied roofing. Its advantage over other roof membranes is its higher strength and increased UV stabilization.

Assembly:
The membrane roll is unrolled horizontally on the roof with the absorption non-woven textile facing the inner space of the building. It is necessary keep a 4-6 cm gap between the membrane and the ceiling and to allow the flow of air in this way for the membrane to work. All openings for the access and exit of air must be protected against the entry of animals. The membrane is fixed to the roof structure by staples from a mechanical stapler, or by stainless nails. The span of the structure (rafters, girders, etc.), i.e. the fixing points of the membrane, must not exceed 1.2 m. After attaching the membrane to the load-bearing structure of the roof, it must be secured in its position by counter battens.
